About the City

Located on the Winooski River on the main pass through the Green Mountains, Montpelier is the capital of Vermont and a part of the Barre metropolitan area. Barre and Montpelier are called the Twin Cities as the two make up the Barre metro area. The city is also the county seat for Washington County. The city is proud to be the nation's smallest capital city with a population of 8,100 residents. The city is a safe place to live; according to the 2003 FBI violent crime report, there were seven violent crimes and no murders, making the violent crime rate 0.09%. The city's population density is low with 780 people per square mile. The typical resident is 41 years old, highly educated, married, travels 19 minutes to work, lives in a household of two, and earns a household income of $40,800.

Recreation

Across the city's four parks, all sorts of facilities are provided and many events are held for residents each year. The 185-acre Hubbard Park includes seven miles of hiking and skiing trails, numerous picnic areas, a ball field, a pond, a sledding hill and a 54-foot observation tower.  North Branch Park includes a river, shore land, nationally registered wetlands, unusual geological features, streams and more. The park covers 193 acres and provides a diverse wildlife for observation. The city also provides residents with program guides so they are always up-to-date about the city's ongoings and entertainment offerings.  For youth, there are nine weeks of Summer Day Camps each year. The Montpelier Recreation Department also provides activities for residents of all ages. The department also provides discount tickets to local amusement parks.
